The Power of Sound and Stillness

Music is a powerful tool for mindfulness. It spans culture and time, moving beyond language and bringing us into deeper connection with ourselves and one another. The presence of music, or even its absence, can shift our mood and completely change how we experience a moment.

When we listen to music or sing, we are not just hearing sound. We are feeling vibration. These subtle shifts can calm the nervous system, open the heart, or move emotion in ways words often cannot. Music has the ability to amplify what is already within us, whether that is anger, joy, grief, or peace.

In yoga, we work with sound through the practice of chanting, also known as kirtan. This is the repetition of simple mantras or phrases, often sung together, to help focus the mind and settle into a meditative state. It becomes less about performance and more about presence. A way to listen, to feel, and to connect with your own voice as a tool for awareness.

This week, I invite you to sit and simply listen to music. No multitasking, no distractions. Just sound. You might explore the lyrics, or gently sing along. Notice how each song makes you feel. Let yourself be immersed in the experience of listening, allowing the ordinary act of hearing to become something deeply present and alive.

Inspire | “The function of music is to release us from the tyranny of conscious thought.” Sir Thomas Beecham

Listen | Mantras for Mindful Moments is a playlist born of our yoga teacher training, where we came together as a community on Sunday to explore the power of chanting. This collection of songs carries the energy of that gathering, simple, grounding, and connected. I hope you can listen, sing along, and find small moments of stillness within it as well.

Try This | To help clear the energy of your space and your mind, try letting go of one thing you have been holding onto that you no longer need. It could be a physical item, a habit, or even a thought pattern. After you release it, pause and notice how you feel.
