Small Detours, Mindful Moments

This morning, I sat down to write my weekly note to all of you and quickly realized something was missing. I had left my computer charger at the Homewood Science Center after training yesterday. My laptop was completely dead, and there was no substitute charger in the house.

In that moment, I had a choice. I could feel frustrated, or I could take a deep breath, get in the car, and simply solve the problem.

So I chose the second option.

On the drive over, I rolled down the windows and breathed deeply. The roads were quiet in that early morning way that only exists before the day truly begins. I noticed the birdsong returning with early spring. I watched the first light of the sunrise appear in soft shades of red, gold, and pale blue. I drove slowly and let myself enjoy the unexpected trip.

By the time I picked up the charger, I realized the inconvenience had quietly become something else. A moment of stillness. A moment of presence. Even the inspiration for this note.

Sometimes the small roadblocks in our day are not really obstacles at all. They are invitations to pause, breathe, and notice the beauty that is already around us.

My hope for you this week is that when life hands you one of those small inconveniences, you meet it with a deep breath and a bit of curiosity. You might discover a moment of mindfulness waiting there.

Inspire | “The heart of most spiritual practices is simply this: Remember who you are. Remember what you love. Remember what is sacred. Remember what is true. Remember that you will die and that this day is a gift. Remember how you wish to live.” Wayne Muller

Listen | I recently made a new playlist for classes and wanted to share it with you here. May this curated selection of songs put a little pep in your step and bring a touch of mindfulness to your daily routines.

Try This | Dusking is the practice of stepping outside at sunset to pause as the day gently turns toward night. It is a moment to watch the light fade, feel the air shift, and allow your body to follow that natural transition. This simple ritual invites you to slow down, release the momentum of the day, and settle into the quiet rhythm of the evening.
