Today, I invite us all to pause and reflect on the profound legacy of Dr. King and the values he championed. Dr. King stood unwaveringly for justice, equality, and the transformative power of love and non-violence. These principles align deeply with the teachings of yoga, which call us to embody ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truth), and seva (selfless service).
This day offers us an opportunity not only to honor Dr. King’s memory but to recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of dismantling hatred, prejudice, and intolerance in all its forms. His dream of a world where all individuals are valued and respected is a dream that requires mindful, consistent action from each of us.
As yogis, we are called to cultivate awareness—of our thoughts, actions, and the collective impact we have on the world. Let this awareness guide us to engage in meaningful ways: listening to marginalized voices, educating ourselves on systemic inequities, and standing against injustice with courage and compassion.
Dr. King once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” In our interconnected world, this truth resonates deeply. As we practice on our mats, let us remember that yoga is not confined to asana. It extends to how we live, how we speak, and how we contribute to the healing of our communities. May we use our understanding of yoga to practice metta (loving-kindness) and to deepen our commitment to fostering unity and understanding.
I encourage each of us to honor MLK Day through ongoing acts of service, open dialogue within our community, and reflection. Consider volunteering, supporting organizations that promote equality, or simply engaging in conversations about how we can collectively create a more just and compassionate world. Together, we embody the change we wish to see.

Listen | Here Comes the Rain by Jai-Jagdeesh invites us to slow down and reflect deeply on the many layers of grief, offering a soulful reminder of the beauty and transformation that can arise from embracing our emotions fully. Take some time this week to listen and sit with the healing power within moments of vulnerability and find comfort in the shared human experience.
Try This | Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths, letting yourself settle into the present moment. Start by offering loving-kindness (metta) to yourself, silently repeating, “May I be happy, healthy, safe, and live with ease.” Next, extend these wishes to someone you love, then to a neutral person, and finally to someone who challenges you, offering them the same blessings. Approach this step with patience, focusing on cultivating compassion rather than forcing emotions.
Finally, expand your intention outward to include all beings, silently wishing, “May all beings be happy, healthy, safe, and live with ease.” Let the warmth of these intentions radiate from your heart, connecting you to the world. Conclude by resting in the feelings of love and compassion you’ve nurtured before gently opening your eyes. This simple practice fosters connection, reduces negativity, and promotes a sense of peace within and around you.
